Her life

Gogo Maggie

She nursed for forty years, sang alto in the choir for fifty, and never once let anyone leave her house without a cup of tea.

Edendale

Margaret was born in Edendale, outside Pietermaritzburg, the eldest of five. She walked her brothers to school every morning and decided, at twelve, that she would be a nurse. Nobody who knew her was surprised that she was.

Forty years on the wards

She trained in Durban and nursed there for four decades, most of them on the children's ward. Parents remembered her name years later. She said the secret was simple: sit down, listen, and never be too busy to hold a hand.

Home

She married Sipho in 1969 and they raised three children in the same house in Pinetown, with roses along the front wall and a kettle that was always warm. After she retired she knitted blankets for the clinic's newborns β€” more than four hundred of them, by the family's count.

Eighty-one years

A life, in a few of its days

Married Sipho

Fifty-four years together, until he passed in 2023.

1975

The house in Pinetown

Three children, seven grandchildren, and a front wall of roses.

2004

Retired, at last

Then joined the clinic's volunteers and started knitting.

At home, with her family

She passed peacefully on 2 November, with her hymn book beside her.

The things she loved

Roses, tea and a good piece of knitting

  • the front wall
    the front wall

    Every spring

She pruned them in July and talked to them all year.

  • Sunday tea
    Sunday tea

    Four o'clock

The good cups came out for everyone, not just for guests.

  • blanket no. 412

    For the clinic

Cream for the babies, always β€” "so it goes with everything".

  • her hand in ours
    her hand in ours

    Always

Whoever sat next to her ended up holding her hand.

Gogo taught me to make tea properly, to sing the alto line, and to never walk past someone who looks lost. I will be doing all three for the rest of my life.

Good to know

For everyone joining us at St Luke's.

Where do I park?

There is parking behind the church hall, and the school across the road has opened its field for the morning.

What should I wear?

Whatever you are comfortable in. Mama loved colour, so you are welcome to wear some.

Can I watch from far away?

Yes β€” the service is streamed live, and the recording will stay on this page for the family abroad.

Can I send flowers?

The family asks instead for a donation to the hospice that cared for her. Details are at the church, or ask any of us.
